The High Sheriff of Cornwall supports the Lord-Lieutenant as His Majesty The King’s representative in Cornwall, taking particular interest in the judiciary, the police and the emergency services.

It is an independent, honorary and non-political appointment for just a year.  In Cornwall the appointment is made by HRH The Duke of Cornwall.

In recent years the role of the High Sheriff has evolved to lend support and encouragement to crime prevention agencies, the voluntary sector, community interest companies and charities delivering vital support to underpin the work of the police and law enforcement agencies in our communities.

The High Sheriff of Cornwall 2024-2025

Stamford (Sam) Timothy John Galsworthy

As a family, the Galsworthy’s can trace our Cornish roots back to the early 1700’s and I am now the 10th generation to live at Trewithen House. I am a passionate Cornishman and advocate for the county. I was schooled initially in Polwhele, Truro, before heading off to Summerfield’s then latterly Radley College. And have now returned to deepen my roots and involvement in this great county.

High Sheriff 2024-25

My career began earlier than most, having decided that University was not for me and started with Fuller’s brewery in west London. After an initial 3 year stint in the UK, they posted me to the USA to drive their North American footprint. Whilst there, I was infected by the burgeoning  craft movement and was inspired to conceive Sipsmith Gin Distillery, along with another  Cornishman, Fairfax Hall. In order to launch the brand upon our return, we needed to influence a change in the UK law to permit small-batch distilling (under 2,000ltrs) to be permitted again; this law having been instrumented in 1821. After a 2-year battle we succeeded and duly launched the first copper distillery in London for nearly 200 years, kickstarting a movement in  gin that lasts to this day. Sipsmith was acquired by multi-national company, Beam Suntory in 2016 and soon went global. I am a two times graduate of the Cambridge Institute in  Sustainability Leadership Course in both business management and sustainability in the built  environment and applied this in my capacity as company Chairman by leading Sipsmith to a B  Corp accreditation.

I now run the family estate at Trewithen in Mid Cornwall. We have a regenerative approach to our farming and a progressive mindset to estate diversity and community involvement generally. We recently established a construction company, Ilex Construction, to rejuvenate and restore some of the ageing building stock at Trewithen as well as support heritage building generally across the county. I am an amateur gardener, taking great interest in our gardens and learning from whomever will lend me their time and expertise.

Enabling me to keep a foot in London and business, I am a Mentor to a few budding  entrepreneurs in London, a role that I relish. I am also a registered mentor with an extraordinary charity called ‘A Band of Brothers’, in Cornwall that mentors young with a relationship with the criminal justice system, providing them support and enabling them to develop and thrive in the communities they live.

Having been a trustee for 6 years, I am now the Vice Chairman of the Cornwall Community  Foundation and a proud Fund Holder for the charity, grant awarding funds to support young  volunteers doing good in their community.

Likewise I am a founding member of a vital movement called ‘Homes for Cornwall’, that looks at tackling the housing crisis in the county.

There’s nothing I like more than a cold swim or being with my three children, Isadora 9, Rafe 7 and Eddie 6. I am a lucky husband to my wife Kitty.

High Sheriff Chaplain 2023-24

High Sheriffs traditionally appoint their own Chaplain for their year to support and assist on matters of faith.  The Chaplain will principally be involved in the Declaration Ceremony on the appointment of The High Sheriff and the Legal Service.

The current High Sheriff Chaplain is Reverend Canon Pat Robson, rector of St Just in Roseland parish church.

Under Sheriff

The High Sheriff has a legal duty to appoint an Under Sheriff who has a vital role in ensuring continuity and deputises for the High Sheriff.  The Under Sheriff is a valuable advisor to new High Sheriffs and is familiar with the protocols of the Court, with considerable experience of ceremonial matters.

The Under Sheriff is usually a solicitor and will be in post for a number of years.
