The High Sheriff of Cornwall, Kate Holborow visited Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service at Tolvaddon this week for a briefing from Chief Fire Officer Mark Hewitt and his team.  It was also the opportunity to welcome Cornwall’s incoming Chief Fire Officer Kathryn Billing, the first female Chief Fire Officer in the South West.

The visit coincided with the retirement presentation, after 30 years of service, to Area Manager Kevin Thomas, also one of Cornwall’s rugby legends.

During the visit the High Sheriff also presented an Unsung Hero Award to the whole Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service team who stepped up so admirably over the last year to deliver so much for Cornwall, whilst keeping the vital frontline service operating.

“I was honoured to present an award to the Cornwall Fire & Rescue team for the work over the course of the pandemic,” explained Kate Holborow.  “Over the last year 10 million items of PPE have been distributed across Cornwall, 31 firefighters trained to drive ambulances (2000 emergency calls handled) and seven firefighters supported Adult Care & Support with safeguarding.  All in addition to the ongoing stellar frontline fire and rescue work.  It truly has been a 24/7/365 operation.

“Cornwall Fire & Rescue Service shows the best example here of commitment, partnership and exceptional team work.  I am very proud in some small way to be representing you and thank you all.”
